How to take thyroid medication

How and when you take your thryoid meds can make a difference

Thyroid hormone is key to your metabolism, as it affects a multitude of body functions. You may feel better by making a few changes to how you take your thyroid medication:

1. Take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach. This generally allows for maximum absorption.  Best time is at least one hour before eating, for best absorption.

2. Take any calcium supplements and vitamins that contain calcium 4 hours after thyroid medication. Calcium can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption.

3. Take any iron supplements and vitamins with iron 4 hours after thyroid medication. Iron can also interfere with thyroid hormone absorption.

4. Take any birth control pills 4 hours after thyroid medication. Birth control pills can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption.

5. Take any Female Hormone Replacement pills 4 hours after thyroid medication. Female Hormone Replacement treatments can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption.

6. Take any antacids at least 3 hours after thyroid medication. Many antacids have calcium in them (see above); read the labels.

7. Antidepressants sometimes interact with thyroid hormone. Medication like Zoloft, Paxil or Prozac can make thyroid medication less effective or do the opposite and make it more effective. Talk to you doctor about any antidepressant you may be taking.
